Traditional phytotherapy is based on natural ingredients that are combined in such a way as to offer a therapeutic benefit to the patients. Ayurveda is an ancient holistic system of medicine from India, using various plant mixtures and claiming spectacular health benefits.
Over the past two years, many reports try to rationalise this type of medicine according to the bioactivity of individual compounds present in the mixture. Some preparations are submitted to natural fermentation witch increases their bioavailability and bioactivity.
The NIVAL-B project is conducted in partnership with Ethnodyne Company. The challenge is to submit a perfectly characterized plant extract to controlled fermentation by a specific unique microorganism. As shown by the expertise of the Pilot Unit in the field of biotransformation, the choice of biocatalyst is crucial.
Metabolite profiling and target bioassays are implemented to demonstrate the improvement of availability and activity.
