TASCMAR comprises eight main parts or Work Packages (WPs)

  • Work Package 1 – Management of Bio-resources

  • Work Package 2 – Chemical investigations

  • Work Package 3 – Anti-ageing and angiogenesis bioassays

  • Work Package 4 – Cultivation improvements

  • Work Package 5 – Innovative pilot scale equipment

  • Work Package 6 – Industrial developments

  • Work Package 7 – Socio-economic and environmental impacts

  • Work Package 8 – Management and dissemination

Objectives

The extensive extraction of bio-resources and subsequent metabolic profiling, fractionation and structure elucidation; building up libraries of extracts and pure compounds.

Main activities

Extractions from all of the libraries built up in WP1 (MACLIB, MICLIB, TARMAC, TARMIC) as well as from the microalgae and resins will be carried out. A sample of each extract will be collected to form and EXTract LIBrary (EXTLIB), which will be sent to WP3 for bioassays. Depending on the high-throughput screening results in WP3, target invertebrates will be investigated further and more extractions will be carried out. Selected microalgae and microorganisms will also be cultivated on a large scale for bioassays in WP3.

The EXTLIB library will undergo metabolomics analysis and the analytical data obtained will be integrated into a database of natural products and pure biomolecules. Extracts will then be classified and dereplication and fingerprinting campaigns will be carried out. Based on the results, the surrounding waters of the invertebrates as well as supporting rocks and sands will be investigated. Selected extracts will be produced on a large scale, fractionated and sent to WP3 for bioassays. Bioactive fractions can then be selected and compounds will be collected to form a MOLecular LIBrary (MOLLIB)
