Partner Description<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA) is the leading and most renowned academic institution in Greece. The main research activities of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products Chemistry of Faculty of Pharmacy are related to the discovery of novel biologically active natural compounds and synthetic derivatives thereof, for several applications such as pharmaceuticals, food supplements and cosmetics from natural sources (plants, marine organisms and microorganisms). Its expertise covers the area of extraction, with emphasis to advanced \u201cgreen\u201d methods, isolation and structure elucidation of natural products using up-to-date NMR techniques and mass spectrometry, profiling and quantitation (NMR & LC-MS) and the creation of corresponding databases. The last 10 years the exploration of Mediterranean and global biodiversity has lead to the establishment of a library of 5000 extracts and more than 2000 unique isolated compounds and a database containing spectra of 800 extracts and compounds. The last ten years, 250 scientific articles have been published in high cited peer reviewed journals. Recently also a Laboratory of Biotechnology has been established that is focused on the discovery of novel enzymes for the biocatalytic modification of bioactive components from biomass using conventional and modern bioinformatics assisted strategies (genome mining), heterologous overexpression and biochemical characterization of recombinant enzymes, study of the structure\/function relationship and regulatory mechanisms of the enzymes induced by saprophytic organisms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Role<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n
